Every fall, a new faculty cohort comes together to fulfill their need for professional development and satisfy their curiosity about service-learning. Full and part-time faculty are eligible to apply for the cohort in early Fall. Each accepted cohort member receives a $500 stipend for their time and work during the year.

As a cohort, we prepare course(s) for a service-learning project by attending two class sessions on service-learning pedagogy. Additionally, we meet throughout the year to discuss service-learning, particular projects & pedagogy we are trying to implement, and to troubleshoot as a course is in motion. In between the first two sessions, participants volunteer at the non-profit connected with the service-learning project they have in mind to use for their course.

The sessions are facilitated by Service-Learning Faculty Coordinators and our district Coordinator, Sarah Tillery. Cohort members learn about the payoffs and pitfalls of service-learning, then develop an enriching, manageable, and sustainable service project that deepens their students’ experience of their course.

Participation in the Service-Learning Faculty Cohort is by application. Applications for 2011-12 are being accepted now! The deadline to apply for the SL Faculty Cohort is Friday, October 7 at 5pm. Applications can be turned in to the Service-Learning Program Office (SY, SS 215) or submitted via email to service-learning@pcc.edu.
