Middle College Program
Middle College students take part in a comprehensive educational program designed to prepare them for college-level work, and to help them succeed once they get there.
No Barriers to Entry
The Middle College covers the cost of PCC tuition, books, and fees, thus removing one of the most significant barriers to entry in to higher education – price. The program also helps students to navigate the sometimes-intimidating college admissions and enrollment processes.
Jefferson High School-Middle College for Advanced Studies students spend their freshman and sophomore years immersed in intensive curricula that prepare them to transition to classes at nearby Portland Community College – Cascade Campus.
Preserving the High School Experience
Even as they prepare for, and eventually take, college-level courses, Middle College students remain high school students. They still play sports, join clubs, go to the prom, and participate in a full-range of extracurricular activities, including the Jefferson Dancers, a world-renowned traveling dance ensemble.
Extensive Wraparound Support Services
The academic and social success of Middle College students is undergirded by a wide array of support services from personnel at Jefferson High School-Middle College for Advanced Studies, PCC – Cascade Campus, and Self-Enhancement Inc. These services range from individual case management, tutoring, specialized college success classes, and orientations to college campus life, and individual mentorship from a Self-Enhancement Inc. “coordinator,” who is available to students 24/7 for any reason.
Real College Classes With Real College Students
Unlike many early college programs, students in the Middle College Partnership are not segregated from the mainstream student body. Students are considered to be full-fledged Portland Community College students in every respect, and attend classes right alongside their PCC peers.
