The Business and International Education (BIE) Program "Going Global"

US Dept. of Education Going Global will provide services to businesses, PCC faculty and students, centered on a 10-month international trade seminar series and networking forums with trade-assistance professionals. Outreach services will encourage small businesses to consider expanding into global markets. Small businesses will participate in the Going Global seminar series and networking forums and receive customized technical assistance to develop and implement a strategic export plan. PCC business faculty members will participate in the seminar series and networking forums. They will incorporate global trade information into their curriculum; create new student seminar/internship and globalization of management courses; and develop an international business certificate. PCC business students will participate in the student seminar/internship, including the seminar series and networking forums and will complete a project that supports a participating business’ export plan. Students will also enroll in a new globalization of management course.

Title III "Strengthening Student Services to Improve Retention"

US Dept. of Education--Office of Post secondary Education The goal of the Title III grant is to improve student retention through the development of a comprehensive online student services portal and extensive faculty development for retention techniques in the classroom. A streamlined student services portal offers a unique solution to communication and access problems identified in an analysis of student, staff, and faculty as well as community surveys and focus groups. The grant will offer the following key elements toward improving student services, satisfaction, and retention: Virtual Advising Assistant, Expanded Online Orientation, and Online Academic Planning tools for students, Online Transfer Center tools, and a web-based student email account for all degree seeking students.

"Portsmouth Partnership" Need Statement, Plan of Operation

U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development--Office of University Partnerships Community Outreach Partnership Center The Portsmouth Partnership will respond to community issues through outreach focused on increasing economic opportunity; building community capacity; and stabilizing housing and basic needs. The Portsmouth Partnership involves a wide variety of PCC programs and community partners. Portsmouth’s public housing residents will be linked with PCC opportunities such as English as a Second Language courses, PCC’s Healthcare Interpreter training program, and the College’s Small Business Development Center. PCC-trained leadership mentors will assist community groups establish tools for effective community organizing and PCC’s service-learning program will work with community organizations. The College will also partner with the Housing Authority of Portland, One Economy Corporation and other service providers to assist residents to access housing and support services. "Framing Student Success: Increasing Math and Science Achievement through Construction Technology"

National Science Foundation--Advanced Technology Education (ATE) The project addresses the problem of high school students’ under-preparation in math, science, and technology. The program establishes two new classes, provides summer work experiences in which students design and build a structure, and offers professional development for high school teachers and counselors about the requirements and rewards of a career in building construction technology.

"Advanced Materials Joining for Tomorrow’s Manufacturing Workforce"

National Science Foundation--Advanced Technology Education (ATE) The project exposes community college and high school students to advanced concepts in metals joining technology by integrating the newest joining processes in manufacturing with classroom studies in math, physics, materials science and computer science.

"Transforming General Biology 103: A Model for the 21st Century"

National Science Foundation--Course, Curriculum and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI) This project creates a learner-centered General Biology 103 course for non-science majors to promote critical thinking, problem solving skills, and creativity through the use of "high technology" (multimedia, virtual lab activities, and web-delivered instructional materials) and "high touch" (collaborative learning, active learning, directed wet lab activities, and small group sessions).

"Creating Avenues, Support and Equity for Women and Minorities in Advanced Technologies (CASE)"

National Science Foundation--Advanced Technology Education (ATE) This project addresses the gender and racial inequity in PCC's advanced technical programs, particularly in the area of Information Technology. The project uses non-traditional recruitment, academic advising, career exploration and support services to increase the participation and success of women and underrepresented minorities in advanced technical education and careers.

"Thirteenth Annual Cascade African Film Festival"

Oregon Council for the Humanities This $4,500 grant allowed the 2003 festival to feature Ethiopian-American film director Haile Gerima and his film, Adwa: An African Victory.
