- What We Do
Friends of Trees' mission is to bring people together to plant and care for city trees and greenspaces in Pacific Northwest communities. We've been doing so since 1989!
- Opportunities for service with us
- Our flagship volunteer opportunity: we organize public planting events every Saturday morning from mid-October through late April for both our Neighborhood Trees program and our Green Space program where you'd be able to simply show up and plant trees. We provide coffee and breakfast treats, as well as gloves, tools and trained volunteerguidance. No experience is necessary and all we ask is that volunteers dress appropriately for the weather. The events begin promptly at 9:00am and last until about 1:00pm, so we ask that people aim to arrive by 8:45am to get signed-in and assigned to a planting crew. It's a great way to get outside, learn how to plant trees, meet people, and help make the Portland metro region greener and healthier!
- Leadership roles: Crew Leaders that are trained volunteer positions and who are crucial to helping lead our events. The Crew Leader role exists for both programs and you would need to attend one all-day Saturday training in November to learn how to plant trees for that program, how to lead our crews of volunteers and how to help be a great liaison to the community at our events. We ask that all Crew Leaders attend at least 4 plantings over the course of the season and these can be scheduled in advance for when they best fit your schedule. Crew leaders typically show up at 8:15am on planting day to help prep for the specifics of each event. It's a really great way to meet people, build a network of friends and acquaintances and learn a lot about planting and caring for trees!
