What We Do

Portland Homeless Family Solutions is a non-profit that operates two emergency shelters for homeless families with children. We provide a safe place for families to be 23 hours a day, 7 days a week. We offer our families many services including 3 meals and 2 snacks a day, free clothing, shower facilities with toiletries, a mailing address, internet, phone, storage for personal items, and help finding permanent housing solutions.

Opportunities for service with us

We use the help of up to 10 volunteers every day at the shelter for the following volunteer positions:

GOOSE HOLLOW FAMILY SHELTER: open from 6:30pm-7:30am daily

MEAL PROVIDER (6:30-8:00 p.m.)

Providing a nutritious dinner each evening is an important amenity for families after a long day. Volunteers who bring our dinner meal find this is a fun way to interact with parents and children and to better acquaint volunteers with the shelter operation. We invite you to come eat with our families and volunteers.

OVER NIGHT HOSTS (7:30 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.)

Over Night hosts may arrive between 7:00 and 8:00 each evening to spend the night, greet parents and children, assist families with personal needs, and wake them in the morning for a continental breakfast before they leave for school, work or the day shelter.

HELPING HAND (6:30-9:30 p.m.)

Being one of our helping hands is an easy way to become more familiar with the shelter, and also an excellent first step to hosting overnight. Helping hands facilitate a welcoming atmosphere for families as you accompany guests while doing laundry, help organize donations and assist with special projects.

KID TIME HOST (6:30-9:30 p.m.)

If you enjoy interacting with children we would love to have you come spend the evening. We find that providing nightly structured kid-friendly play, crafts, or story time is a fun way to occupy the children after dinner and give parents a bit of a break.

THIRTEEN SALMON FAMILY CENTER: open from 8am-6pm daily

OPENING HOST (8:00-11:00a.m.)

You will help the manager with the day to day tasks of the shelter. This may include sorting donations, getting things out that guests will need for showers, sanitizing areas, helping families get settled, putting out morning snack and playing with children.

LUNCH HOST  (11:00am-1:00p.m.)

The lunch assistants help in getting food and beverages prepared so that the families can assemble their own lunch. This is an excellent time to catch up with families during the day.

AFTERNOON HOST (Mon.-Sat. 3:00-6:00pm)

Come spend time with the children at the shelter, help them with homework, lead activities, and hear about their day.  You may also set out afternoon snack, sort donations, organize, and sanitize.
