What We Do

Barnes Elementary School is a place where people are committed to working collaboratively for the common purpose of supporting academic and social growth for each and every student. We are fortunate to play host to a diverse population of students and we enjoy a sense of community that is truly special.

More than half of our students are English language learners from a multitude of countries. Many of our Spanish-speaking students become bilingual alongside native English speakers learning Spanish in our two-way immersion program. Outside of our immersion classrooms, we have a diverse population of learners with unique learning needs including a growing group of Somali students.

Opportunities for service with us
Barnes Elementary School and  AmeriCorps are teaming up to continue an after-school homework club at Beaverton's Merlo Station apartment complex. We are looking for volunteers interested in engaging with elementary-aged children, offering tutoring support and mentoring while facilitating a safe space in which they can learn. The club is unique in that the majority of its attendees are members of the Somali-Bantu population, providing volunteers with an opportunity to learn more about this culture while meeting students' needs. The Homework Club will begin early October, will meet every Monday and Thursday from 3:30-5, and volunteers should be ready to commit to at least 1 day per week. Please contact Americorps worker Zandy Gordon at with your interest as soon as possible.

To help move the process along faster, please begin the background check process either at the school office or online: http://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/barnes/home.html.  Background checks may take between 2-5 weeks depending on volume of applications. You can call the school office to see if yours has been processed before reporting to your volunteer placement. (Office 503-672-3500) We are looking forward to working with you! Zandy Gordon          zandy.gordon@gmail.com  OR (719)338-8146

Volunteer opportunities are also available within classrooms (Spanish immersion or standard English) daily from 8:00-2:30.

We also host an onsite afterschool program (SHINE) from 2:30 until 5:30 on Monday through Thursday. We have a substantial need for volunteers to help out with this program that is being funded by a 21st Century Schools grant. The contact for this program is Patty  Narvaez. Please contact her through the school office number: 503-672-3500.
