What We Do

The Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program (VLT) recruits, trains and supports volunteer tutors who work with adult students who want to learn English (ESOL), improve reading, writing and math (ABE) or prepare for the GED exam (high school equivalency exam).  There are seven sites available around the Portland metro area and several community locations.  Tutors work one-on-one, with a small group or as a classroom aide.

Opportunities for service with us

New tutors may attend a 12 hour training workshop and are then matched with students by a coordinator.  Tutors are asked to commit to at least 6 months at 2-4 hours per week.  Students are both native and non-native English speakers who want to improve their basic skills.  Instructional materials and guidance/consultation with a tutor coordinator are provided.
