After the introductions and greetings, we reviewed the mission of the committee and the decision to break up the many tasks into logical groups. We let the committee know that at future meetings, we would have a resource sharing opportunity to look at local and national research in the area of basic skill preparation and prerequisites. Before the groups convened, we had a general discussion.

A few big questions arose regarding implementation:

  1. How do we handle the casual/nondegree-seeking student?
  2. What is the role of the faculty member and their advising to students?
  3. What are the budgeting implications for the implementation?

We also began a list of tasks for the committee leaders:

  1. to begin communication with advisors right away
  2. to draft a letter to the SACs for their inservice
  3. to explore the formation of a general humanities/social science course for DE-level students.
  4. to work with the EAC leaders and EAC Curriculum Committee Chair to iron out a process for those SACs wishing to opt-out

After the groups convened to begin their work, we held a debriefing to hear about highlights from the subgroups

  1. Do we need a more specific override procedure?
  2. We need to address those courses that have some prereqs, but not up to the policy’s requirement
  3. We need to define the role of Staff Development
  4. IR could help us debundle the PCC study looking at basic skill preparation and success (discipline by discipline)
  5. We must use all channels to communicate to students about prereqs: ”No student shall be harmed.”
