ENG/WR/DE Qualifications prior to June 2020

Developmental Education Instructor Qualifications Archive

Instructors in the area of Developmental Education must meet one of the following requirements:

Master’s Degree in an appropriate educational field (for example, special/ developmental/ adult education, reading, writing, math, or English) AND experience working with underprepared students (DE Math or English)

OR

Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate educational field (for example, special/ developmental/ adult education, reading, writing, or English)  AND three years equivalent full-time teaching experience in reading, writing, or English within grade 9 through adult (DE English)

OR

Bachelor’s Degree in Math, Math Education, or  an appropriate educational field (for example, special/ developmental/ adult education)  with a math emphasis AND three years equivalent full-time teaching experience in mathematics within grade 6 through adult (DE Math)

DE qualifications prior to 2010

Instructors in the area of Developmental Education must meet one of the following requirements:

Master’s Degree in appropriate educational field ( for example, special/ developmental/ adult education, reading, math English) AND recent experience working with disadvantaged students (DE Math and English)

OR

Have a high level of demonstrable competency gained through a combination of study, teaching experience, and/ or professional performance in the subject area (DE English)

OR

Bachelor’s Degree in Math, Math Ed of Ed with a math emphasis AND three years equivalent full-time teaching experience in mathematics within grades 6-16 (DE Math)

ENG/WR: English and Writing Qualifications prior to June 2020
English and Writing Instructor
  • Education: MFA, MA or PhD in English, Literature, or Rhetoric/Composition, OR an MA or PhD in an interdisciplinary field with a minimum of 30 graduate quarter credit -hours in one or a combination of English, Literature, or Rhetoric/Composition.
  • Experience: Have taught at least four college-level composition classes or have equivalent college classroom experience through a mentoring or internship program.

Education: MFA, MA, or PhD in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or equivalent interdisciplinary degree (e.g., Comparative Literature, American Studies, Humanities, Linguistics) with a minimum of 30 upper-division and graduate quarter credit hours in Literature, Rhetoric and Composition, or a combination of the two, with a minimum of 9 graduate quarter credit hours in these areas.

Letter to Human Resources:

  • Education: MFA, MA, or Ph. D. in English, Rhetoric, and Composition, or equivalent interdisciplinary degree (e.g. Comparative Literature, American Studies, Humanities) with a minimum of 29 credit hours in literature and/ or Rhetoric and composition, with a minimum of 9 graduate hours in these areas.
  • Experience: In addition to the required education, the ideal candidate will have experience teaching writing
    and/or literature at the lower division collegiate level.

  • Experience: In addition to the required education, the ideal candidate will have experience teaching writing and/or literature at the lower division collegiate level.
