EEFS (ECE & HEC) Instructor Qualifications prior to April 2015:

General Requirements


Masters degree in the subject area (listed below) or a Master’s degree in a related area plus 30 quarter credits of coursework in the subject area AND three years recent, full-time equivalent, non-teaching work experience in the field (working with children, families and early childhood care and education professionals in programs serving young children and their families).


Instructors who meet the above requirement may teach all ECE and HEC courses, with the exception of ECE 234.

This list may not be inclusive as there are other degree titles that may be appropriate for the subject and related areas. The Division Dean, in consultation with the Faculty Department chair will make a recommendation to the Dean of Instruction about the applicability of a particular degree that is outside the scope of this list. The Department Chair can determine the applicability of a particular degree to teaching a specific Early Education & Family Studies course.

For ECE 120, 121, 122, 123, 132, 170, 173, 174, 175A, 175B, 175C, 175D, 177, 179, 184, 185, 186, 187, 188, 189, 191, 193, 194, 197, 198, and HEC 157

Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education   OR  a Bachelor’s degree in a related area (e.g., Child Development, Human Development, or Family Studies)  plus 30 quarter credits in upper division  coursework in Early Childhood Education) 
AND   four years recent, full-time, non-teaching work experience in the field  (working with children, families and early childhood care and education professionals in programs serving young children and their families).

For ECE  170, 173, 174, 175A, 175B, 175C, 175D, 177, 179, 184, 185, 186, 187, 188, 189, 191, 193, 194, 197, and 198

General Requirements  

OR

Bachelors degree in a subject area related to the course in question OR Bachelor’s degree in a related area (i.e., Child Development, Human Development, or Family Studies)  plus 30 quarter credits in upper division  coursework in a subject area  related to the course in question
AND   four years recent, full-time, non-teaching work experience in the field (working with children, families and early childhood care and education professionals in programs serving young children and their families).

For HEC 157

General Requirements  

OR

Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education OR Bachelor’s degree in a related area (i.e., Child Development, Human Development, or Family Studies) plus 30 quarter credits in upper division coursework in the subject area) 
AND   Four years recent, full-time, non teaching work experience in the field  (working with children, families and early childhood care and education professionals in programs serving young children and their families).  

OR

Associates degree in the Early Childhood Education
AND 5 years recent work experience with children (birth through 5) and their parents

  • At least 30 quarter credits of ECE-related coursework, OR
  • Child Development Associate (CDA) and at least 20 quarter credits of ECE-related coursework.

Plus 5 years of recent, full-time, non-teaching work experience in the field.
In Early Childhood Education, this refers to recent, full-time work experience with children, families, and ECE programs.

  • OR
    • Demonstrated competency and/or qualifications set by licensing organization in the field.
    • Required coursework is ECE 100, ECE 273, ECE 175 (a-b), ECE 199A, ECE elective
