BMZA - Biology and Management of Zoo Animals Instructor Qualifications

Instructors assigned to specific courses must meet the following requirements:

BMZA 107 Basic Horticulture for Zookeepers:

  • Master's degree in Horticulture, Botany/Plant Sciences, Landscape Design, Agricultural or Environmental Sciences or a related field (and have completed at least 30 quarter hours of upper division credit in the subject area) AND have a minimum of three years of recent teaching or nonteaching experience in horticulture, OR
  • Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Botany/Plant Sciences, Landscape Design, Agricultural or Environmental Sciences or a related area (and have completed at least 30 quarter hours of upper division credit in the subject area) AND have a minimum of four years of recent teaching or nonteaching experience in horticulture, OR
  • Associates' degree in Horticulture, Botany/Plant Sciences, Landscape Design, Agricultural or Environmental Sciences and have a minimum of five years of recent nonteaching experience in horticulture, OR
  • Have a high level of demonstrable competency gained through a combination of study, teaching experience, and/or professional performance in the subject area, and have a minimum of five years of recent professional and/or teaching experience in the area of horticulture.

 

BMZA 220 Veterinary Procedures for Zookeepers:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree plus veterinary licensure in the State of Oregon by the Oregon Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, OR
  • Associate of Applied Science degree or the equivalent in Veterinary Technology from an AVMA accredited institution AND State of Oregon Certification as a licensed Veterinary Technician (CVT) AND 5 years of recent experience working in a veterinary hospital, clinic, research facility, or the equivalent with at least 2 years of experience with exotic animal medicine, OR
  • Have a high level of demonstrable competency gained through a combination of study, teaching experience, and/or professional performance in the subject area, and have a minimum of five years of recent professional and/or teaching experience in the area of exotic animal veterinary medicine.

 

BMZA 265 Exhibit Construction,  Maintenance, and Repair:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in construction or a field appropriate to construction AND five years recent technical experience in residential/light commercial or animal exhibit construction is required. Teaching experience in the area of construction may be substituted for recent construction industry experience OR
  • Have a high level of demonstrable competency gained through a combination of study, teaching experience, and/or professional performance in the subject area, and have a minimum of five years of recent professional and/or teaching experience in the area of construction.

 

All other BMZA 100- and 200- level courses:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or Master’s in Zoology, Zoo and Aquarium Management/Leadership, Wildlife Biology, Animal Behavior, or Animal Sciences or related science field or science education (and have completed at least 30 quarter hours of upper division credit in the subject area) and have a minimum of three years of recent teaching or nonteaching experience in the subject area OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in Zoology, Zoo /Animal Science, Wildlife Biology, or Animal Behavior, or related science field or science education (and have completed at least 30 quarter hours of upper division credit in the subject area) and have a minimum of four years of recent teaching or nonteaching experience in the subject area OR
  • Associate’s degree in Zoo Technology and have a minimum of five years of recent nonteaching experience in the subject area, OR
  • Have a high level of demonstrable competency gained through a combination of study, teaching experience, and/or professional performance in the subject area, and have a minimum of five years of recent professional and/or teaching experience in the subject area.
