ABE/GED® Instructor Qualifications ARCHIVE

ABE/GED® Instructor Qualifications prior to April 2016:

Required
  1. Master’s Degree in Education, Adult Education, or in a related field and
  2. Two years experience teaching basic skills (reading, writing, and/or math) to undereducated, at-risk, and multi-cultural adult or high-school populations and
  3. Have basic computer literacy skills
Preferred
  • Degree in Adult Education, Special Education, English, Reading, Social Science, Math, Developmental Education
  • C-Best or an equivalent exam in Reading, Writing, and Math

For Spanish GED® Instruction – Demonstrated Competency Requires

  • Masters Degree in any field
  • Native or near-native fluency in Spanish
  • 2 years of experience teaching academic subjects in Spanish

Possible Additional Requirements

Other specialized skills may be required according to ABE site and level needs. These requirements may also include:

  • Learning disabilities background
  • Reading instruction certificate, endorsement and /or significant course work
  • Course work in second language acquisition

Minimum education and Experience requirements:

  1. Hold a bachelor’s degree in one of the following: Adult Education, Developmental Education, English, Reading, Social Science, Mathematics or the equivalent
  2. A Master’s Degree in one of the above disciplines is preferred.
  3. Three years experience teaching undereducated adults.
  4. Demonstrate mathematics proficiency at high school level.
  5. Demonstrate written and spoken communication skills.

ABE Instructors

Minimum education and Experience requirements:

  1. Hold a bachelor’s degree in one of the following:
    Adult Education, Developmental Education, English, Language Arts, Reading, Education, Social Science, or Equivalent.
  2. Endorsement, certificate, or significant course work in reading.
  3. Three years experience teaching undereducated adults – emphasis on teaching reading.
  4. Demonstrate written and spoken communication skills.
