  1. Using ACT and SAT scores for Placement into Writing and Math Courses
Dennis Bailey reviewed the reasons for adopting SAT and ACT score guidelines for PCC placement. It would reduce the amount of testing, and save time for Testing staff and
students. It would also save over $1500 in testing costs. Dennis will be talking with the appropriate SACs regarding this proposal.

Action: The SDC supported Dennis's proposal to pilot use of the following placement guidelines over the coming year:
    SAT Verbal 470 or higher
    460 or lower
    Take WR 121
    Take COMPASS
    ACT English 24 or higher

  2. Policy re: Smoking on PCC Property
Linda Reisser and Kendi Esary were requested to synthesize a list of "pros and cons" related to banning smoking at PCC (revised copy attached). These were discussed,
along with other materials (an article on Clark College's ban on smoking, a memo from Darrel Kraxberger to Steve Sivage July 23, 2003, and a prototype of a new policy, based
    on Clark College's).

Action: After discussion, the committee voted ten to zero with one abstention to recommend that PCC implement a restriction against smoking or other tobacco usage
within the perimeter of all PCC properties, including sidewalks, parking lots, landscaped areas, recreational areas and buildings on any PCC properties, beginning in Fall, 2006.
The committee recommends the establishment of a task force to plan the implementation of this ban in a way that promotes cessation of smoking, provides education about the
health risks of tobacco use, and reflects compassion for tobacco users. The task force should include students, faculty and staff, Public Safety officers, OSD staff, Physical Plant
staff, and both smokers and non-smokers. Dean Reisser was recommended as chair.

  3. Policy re: Children on Campus
A policy draft was reviewed and sent back for further work.

  4. LEAN Process Reports - Rebecca Mathern gave an update on the implementation of recommendations that came from the LEAN enrollment management process, including:
    • Reducing response time on Admissions letter from 30 days to 1 day.
    • Upfront transcript evaluation (for critical prerequisites) saves Advisors' and Counselors' time during peak times.
    • Five different override forms have been reduced to two forms.
    • Wait time for receiving alternative loan checks has been reduced from two weeks to immediate release.
    • The Admissions letter will be sent electronically.
    • Parking permits will be sold in more locations, including bookstores.
    • Students will be automatically informed of holds on their records before registration.

Meeting adjourned at 11:00 am.
