Fitness Technology Internship Course
In order to earn the Fitness Technology Certificate or AAS Degree, every Fitness Technology student must register for and successfully complete 1 or 2 four credit internships (FT280). NOTE: for certificate (FT 1yr or HOAF) students: one internship; for AAS Degree students: two internships.
This internship, which provides the Fitness Technology student with an opportunity to practice and apply newly gained skills in a "real-life" work experience, must be completed in the last term the student is enrolled in the PCC Fitness Technology program (i.e. the term in which the student earns his/her certificate and/or degree).
Application Policy
The application policy for entrance into the internship is as follows:
-
Each eligible student will access an FT Internship Application on this website (link below).
-
Student must completely fill out the application, attach an updated resume, and turn it in to his/her Fit Tech Advisor on or before Thursday, 12/7/12.
The Fit Tech Advisors will check each student's application and resume, and will do one of two things, depending on the student's status:
-
If the student has completed and/or is on track to complete the required coursework and application materials, the Fit Tech Advisor will note this on the application and notify the student within one week.
-
If the student has not satisfactorily completed the program requirements or will not have completed them by the planned internship term, the Fit Tech Advisor will notify the student that the internship is not approved. After the student has completed the required coursework, the student must repeat the application process in the following year.
The Internship Faculty Mentor is the Fit Tech faculty in charge of this course. After you are approved for this course by your Fit Tech Advisor, you will meet with your mentor (Mike Guthrie for Spring 2013 FT 280 students, Janeen Hull for Summer 2013 FT 280 students) on or before 1/18/13. He or she is the contact person for both the student and the site supervisor. The Internship Faculty Mentor is the instructor of FT 280 and will grade the students’ papers/assignments, visit the students on site, and helps troubleshoot any problems that may arise.
Students do internships at a wide variety of sites from larger athletic clubs and community centers to small personal training businesses. Examples include, Southwest Community Center, Tri-D Fitness Training & Therapy, Holladay Park Plaza, and Studio X. Each student will get a list of potential internship sites from their Fit Tech Advisor or Internship Faculty Mentor. It is the responsibility of the student to choose the site and make the initial contact. Students may look into sites that are not on the Potential Internship Site List.
