Careers in the Trades

What will I do on the job?

Each apprenticeship is trade specific and duties are outlined in the respective JATC Standards. You may refer to the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries (BOLI) Apprenticeship and Training Division website.

What skills will I use on the job?

Skills used on the job will depend on the specific trade. All apprenticeship programs emphasize on-the-job experience, balanced by coursework.

How much can I earn?

Apprentices earn a percentage of a journey level wage. Starting rates are usually 40-50% of the journey level wage, and increases are generally given every six months. Apprentices may also receive other benefits such as vacation pay, health and welfare benefits and pension credits. Facilities Maintenance graduates starting hourly wages in the Portland area for entry level positions range from approximately $10 to $14 per hour. With a little on-the-job experience, the hourly wage can increase significantly.

Who will hire me?

Trade-related service companies. Often completing apprentices are hired by the company where they serve their apprenticeship.
