A Little Background
Founded over a decade ago to address the cultural needs of students of color, the Sylvania Multicultural Center provides services that support academic achievement, leadership development, and the retention of students of color. The Center’s mission is to support multi-racial students in receiving academic, social and cultural support. The Center is a central place that nurtures learning and the achievement of personal and educational goals through cultural enrichment, peer tutoring, and mentorship. The Center is dedicated to developing multicultural student leaders and raising awareness of issues related to race and culture on campus.

Services
- Personalized assistance with entering college.
- One-on-one peer tutoring in pre-college and college level math and science courses.
- Scholarship search assistance.
- Referrals to campus and community services such as:
- Counseling
- Financial Aid
- Job Placement
- Health Care
- Interpretation
- Immigration Rights

Student Leadership Training Program
The Multicultural Student Leadership Training Program participants staff the Multicultural Center as paid Student Leaders working as Peer Tutors and Student Coordinators. Student Leaders put into practice peer tutoring, advocacy, problem solving, communication skills, program planning and campus activism. The Center's student leaders develop programs and events to foster understanding of issues related to race, ethnicity, and culture on campus.
Applications for 2008-2009 Paid Internship
Applications are due May 2, 2008 for the 2008-09 academic year.
- Become a participant of the Multicultural Student Leadership Training Program and work in the Multicultural Center as a Peer Tutor or Student Coordinator.
- Develop skills in peer tutoring in math and science, student advocacy, problem solving, communication, program planning and campus activism.
- Learn how to develop programs and events to raise awareness of issues impacting students of color and increase understanding of issues related to race, ethnicity and culture.
- Join a team of diverse students to make a difference on campus and in the lives of other students.
Students selected will commit to:
- Attend Fall Training (Sept. 2,3,4,8,9,10,11,12,17,18), and Retreat (Sept. 5,6 & 7)
- Work for entire academic year 2008/2009 (Fall-Spring)
- Maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA and 6 credit hours per term at Sylvania
- Work 10 to 12 hours per week including two hour staff meetings.
