Program Overview
This two-term course prepares participants for a career in phlebotomy. Covers collecting, handling, transporting, processing blood specimens for analysis; laboratory information systems; anatomy and physiology of body systems; pathologic conditions; specimen collection; use/care of lab equipment; monitoring quality control.
- Part I, classroom

97 clock hours. Text & approved application required. Upon acceptance into course, must show proof of recent PPD (TB test) and vaccinations for Hepatitis B, and measles.
- Part II, clinical practicum

200 c!ock hours/ 7 credit hours in affiliate laboratory (hospital, private, physician's office) under laboratory personnel supervision. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Part I.

- How long is the training?
- The phlebotomy lab assisting training consists of two courses taken over a two-term period. The first term is the lecture portion (Part I) and consists of 97 contact hours (9.7 CEU). The second term is the clinical practicum (Part II) and consists of 200 contact hours (7 credits).
- When is the training offered?
- The phlebotomy - lab assisting courses are offered twice per year. Part I is usually offered in the evening, typically 5pm to 8pm. Part II is only offered during the day, typically 7am to 3:30pm Monday through Friday for five weeks, 40 hours per week.
- Where is the training offered?
- Part I is offered at Cascade Campus. Part II is offered at various laboratories throughout the Portland Metro area.
- What are the course descriptions?
- First term (Part I): CEU 954L (non credit) The material covers collecting, handling, transporting, and processing blood specimens for analysis. Participants will learn about laboratory information systems, anatomy and the physiology of body systems, as well as pathologic conditions, use/care of lab equipment and how to monitor quality control. Required: approved application, written proof of vaccinations. There is a text that must be purchased for this course.
- Second term (Part II): MLT 150 (7 credits): Students receive training in a clinical laboratory to learn basic laboratory assisting skills. Introduces students to specimen processing, phlebotomy and information systems. Stresses professionalism, interpersonal skills and safety. Keyboarding skills recommended. This course is designed to allow students to develop the skills knowledge and attitude required to function in a professional manner in the health care setting. Client services, quality assurance and equipment use and maintenance are also covered. Student may be introduced to the lab assistant’s role in blood ban, chemistry, coagulation, hematology, microbiology, and urinalysis. Upon completion, students must have successfully completed the 100 venipunctures and 25 skin punctures required for the exam through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (www.ascp.org) for phlebotomy certification. Students will be scheduled for 200 hours in five consecutive weeks, Monday through Friday, during the day shift.
- After taking these courses, are there any licensure or certification exams I can take?
- Yes, upon completion of these two courses, students may be eligible to take the national board exam for phlebotomy certification through Americal Society for Clinical Pathologists.
