Secondary Professional Technical Education and its Role with CAM

Professional Technical Education (PTE) is an essential component of the Certificate of Advanced Mastery (CAM). Professional Technical programs provide students with a relevant, career-related context with proven strategies that can help students attain a CAM. The secondary PTE program criteria assure a high level of excellence supported through the identification of academic, career-related and technical standards, measurement of performance and high expectations for student success.
The purpose of PTE is to assure that each student:
- Integrates technical and career skill proficiencies with academic content
- Prepares for the workplace, further education, training and family and community roles.
The purpose of CAM is to assure that each student is prepared for successful transitions to his or her next steps.
- In preparation for successful transitions to next steps, each student
- Pursues his/her personal, academic, and career interests and post high school goals
- Is actively engaged in his/her own educational planning and takes responsibility for his/her own learning
- Applies high level academic and career-related knowledge and skills in relevant and meaningful learning experiences
- Has support from school, parents and the community.

Curriculum, Instruction and Student Evaluation:
- Curriculum and instruction support the achievement of state academic standards through contextual learning.
- Program is of sufficient size, scope and quality and includes curriculum and instruction that leads to appropriate technical knowledge and skills and high skill, high wage jobs.
- Program curriculum and instruction include the career learning frameworks including All Aspects of the Industry.
- Program provides career-related learning experiences that provide students opportunities for meeting academic standards, technical standards, and career-related learning standards.
- Multiple types of assessments are utilized to measure student achievement, development and progress

Students receive curriculum opportunities and learning experiences that documents the meeting of academic and career-related learning standards in a collection of evidence.
- Develop an education plan and build an education profile.
- Demonstrate extended application through a collection of evidence.

- Student leadership organization provides students multiple opportunities to demonstrate success in meeting academic and technical skills and standards.

Postsecondary Connections:
- Program has connections with postsecondary partners and engages in joint program and curriculum planning and development activities.
- Program curriculum and assessment are aligned with postsecondary options.
- Program scope and sequence offers students tech prep opportunities, dual credit, advanced placement, and other programs that lead to successful transition to postsecondary next steps.

Comprehensive Guidance:
- Students in the program receive accurate, current and high quality educational and career information and resources, including information about occupational opportunities that are non-traditional for their gender.
- Students in the program receive assistance in developing 4-6 year high school and postsecondary goals and education/ career/personal plan consistent with interests, achievements, aptitudes, and abilities.
- Students in the program receive assistance in the preparation for and achievement of their goals and the transition to their postsecondary next steps.
- Student learning will include and connect three interrelated areas of student development: academic, career and personal/ social.

- Program supports academic and technical achievement for each student.
- Counseling, guidance and career development services are provided to each student.
