Washington County School-to-Work/Careers

This handbook has been prepared to assist a School-to-Work/Career (STW/C) Coordinator in their tasks.

School-to-Work/Career was initiated in 1994 when the National School-to-Work Opportunities Act was signed into law. Originally the program was referred to as School-to-Work. Some districts in Oregon and Washington County have chosen to refer to the program as School-to-Career. The rationale for their choice is based on a community perception that School-to-Work refers to a program that relates only to students not planning to pursue post-secondary education.

The STW/C program consists of school-based learning, work-based learning, and activities connecting the two. The internships and some of the other STW/C activities have long been a part of professional/technical (vocational) education. In an October 2001 conference, Bill Clinton stated, "School-to-Work helps students see the relevance of their studies for their futures, motivating them to attend classes and study hard, and has created thousands of new partnerships between businesses and schools".

You may be asked by staff or businesses "What is School-to-Work/Career (STW/C)?". Following is an overview of the STW/C program.
