Definition of Professional Technical Education (PTE)

Professional technical education is a program of study that

  • integrates technical and career proficiencies with academic content; and
  • prepares students for the workplace, further education, training and family and community roles.

Further assurances are given that PTE:

  • integrates academics with vocational and technical education through a coherent sequence of courses to ensure learning in the core academic and vocational and technical subjects
  • provides students with strong experience in and understanding of all aspects of an industry
  • is of such size, scope, and quality to bring about improvement in the quality of vocational and technical programs
  • is designed to enable special populations to meet the State adjusted levels of performance.

According to the State Plan, Perkins funding is to be used for ODE Approved Professional Technical Education programs. The approval process is arranged through the Regional Coordinator. For Washington County and Eastern Columbia County schools contact Bill Manley at PAVTEC; for Portland Public Schools contact Ken Kline (503-916-3325).
