Keynote Speaker:

The keynote speaker was Marcela Alcantar, who was featured in  a full-page article 3/14/01 in the Hispanic News.  She is a civil engineer who owns her own firm, Alcantar & Associates whom most recently was involved in designing portions of the MAX light rail line, among other projects.

She grew-up in Mexico under very impoverished conditions, has had many challenges in her life - including dropping out of school, doubt, resistant friends, family prophecy and tradition - but eventually became a civil engineer.  She has a daughter at Jesuit High School and mentors several girls including a Portland State University student who is in the civil engineering program.

Some quotes from the article about her:

"Apply yourself and do it right the first time; or start over and work twice as hard."

"I want to work on projects that will create a better community for my people.  I also have a responsibility as a Latina to be a good role model for the young women of tomorrow."
