Certificate of Advanced Mastery (CAM)

What is CAM?

The Certificate of Advanced Mastery (CAM) is an Oregon school reform initiative targeted at primarily eleventh and twelfth grades. It contains a strong component of contextual learning around career interests.

For a synopsis of CAM, select "CAM At-A-Glance" in the left margin.

There are currently two Web sites at the Oregon Department of Education that contain CAM information. The more current and updated site is http://www.ode.state.or.us/cimcam/. At this site you will find the following:

  • Certificate of Advanced Mastery Guide for Schools
The State Board adopted the CAM requirements on December 6, 2001.
  • Planning for CAM Implementation
CAM Readiness Guide: A Self-Evaluation Tool for Schools
  • New Century Schools
  • Career and Life Role Common Curriculum Goals and CAM Career-Related Learning Standards
  • Career Learning Frameworks

The other Web site, http://www.ode.state.or.us/opte/Cam/index.htm contains some other information, including:

  • Endorsement Area Contextual Frameworks:
The endorsement area contextual framework guides the development of curriculum, instruction and assessment in a Certificate of Advanced Mastery program. It is a framework for integrating the academic and career-related learning standards within the context of an endorsement area.
  • Aligning Instruction for CAM - A Project Integration Tool:
This is a process tool for alignment of student projects, standards, and endorsement area contextual frameworks.
  • Career and Life Role Common Curriculum Goals and Grade 12 Career-Related Learning Standards:
This document shows the alignment of Career and Life Role Common Curriculum Goals with the Grade 12 Career-Related Learning Standards.
  • New Century Schools:
The selected pilot sites will collect and disseminate lessons learned and models created using the design elements for the Certificate of Advanced Mastery (CAM). Each pilot site will implement a CAM prior to statewide implementation in 2004-05.
