Where do reserve materials come from?
Instructors have the primary responsibility for collecting and purchasing materials for reserve. But, the library may, at its discretion, purchase items for the reserve collection. As demand justifies, specific items may be put on reserve by the library staff after consultation with the instructor.
How do I submit items?
Traditional (paper, folder, book, video) reserves:
Fill out the course reserves submission form (fillable pdf) (also available in paper at each campus library checkout desk). The form must be printed and brought to the library with the materials.

Students must sign a student release form to have their materials put on reserve.
How long does it take to process my request?
Requests are processed in the order in which they are received. Items submitted prior to the start of term will be available in 1-2 days (longer after the start of term).
What items can be placed on reserve?
- Books (From library collection or personal copies)
- Photocopies of articles (special copyright instructions)
- Videos/DVDs (library-owned items may be placed on reserve for up to 2 weeks at a time)
- Sample exams
- Lecture notes
- Homework and solution sets
- Any other item needed as supplemental material for your class
What about copyright and photocopies?
Materials may be placed on reserve for one term while you seek permission from the vendor. Bring a copy of the vendor's permission letter to the library for subsequent terms. Read PCC's copyright policy.
Instructors and their departments are responsible for any copyright fees. Vendors may take several weeks to grant permission.
To obtain permission, do one of the following:
- Students must sign a student
release form to have their materials put on reserve.
- Visit the vendor's web site. Many have online
request forms.
- Go to the Copyright
Clearance Center
- Use the course reserves copyright
permission letter (Word)
- Fill in the highlighted fields
- Print and mail or fax to the vendor
A copy of the title page must be attached to the photocopy, or the following must be written on the first page:
- Author
- Title (book or journal)
- Title of article (journal)
- Publisher
- Date of publication
- Volume
- Issue
- Pages
Reserves staff will also stamp the following message on all reserves:

Loan periods
You determine the loan period:
- 2 hour and 3 hour (library use only)
- 4 hour, 24 hour, 2 days, and 1 week (check out available)
Can staff check out reserve materials?
Reserves may be checked out to faculty and staff according to the reserve time limit. Term loans will not be made.
How long can materials be kept on reserve?
Photocopies and electronic files of copyrighted materials may be kept on reserve for one term only. If longer use is required, permission must be granted from the copyright owner. Faculty-owned materials may stay on reserve for as long as the instructor deems necessary.
All personal items not picked up by the instructor at the end of the term will be returned to the instructor's campus address. Library owned materials will be returned to the open shelves.
