Providing Persistent Links

What is a persistent link? It is a link that connects users directly to journal articles or other items in library databases from either on or off-campus. For example, http://0-www.jstor.org.library.pcc.edu/stable/257877 is a persistent link to an article in the JSTOR database.

Persistent links can be used as part of Blackboard, Instructor web pages, or electronic course reserves. They can be added to course syllabi, online bibliographies, reading lists and other class materials or shared with a colleague in an email. To find persistent links, locate the item in a database then follow the instructions below.

1. Find an article
2. Copy the "Document URL" at the bottom of the page
3. Paste the URL into desired location
E-books
1. Search the library catalog
2. Find an e-book and navigate to the full record
3. Scroll down to "Get it online" and select the URL link for "PCC electronic book"
4. Copy the URL that displays in the browser window
5. Paste the URL into desired location
EBSCOhost
Includes: All Ebscohost databases to which the library subscribes. See: Databases by Title
1. Search for an article in EBSCOhost then click on the article title to get to the full-record page
2. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and locate the "Persistent link to this record (Permalink)"
3. Copy the persistent link
4. Paste the URL into desired location
Gale Virtual Reference Library
1. Search for an article or e-book in any Gale database
2. Select the "InfoMark" in the top left tool bar
3. Copy the URL that is displayed
4. Paste the URL into desired location
JSTOR
1. Search for an article in JSTOR.
2. Open the Item information view
3. Copy the Stable URL (Example: http://www.jstor.org/stable/257877)
4. Edit the URL - Add "0-" before the "www"
5. Edit the URL - ".library.pcc.edu" after the ".org" and before the "/"
6. Example of finished URL: http://0-www.jstor.org.library.pcc.edu/stable/257877
7. Paste the URL into desired location
LexisNexis Academic Universe
Includes the Oregonian, New York Times and other magazines and newspapers.
1. Find an article in LexisNexis
2. Use the Durable Links Builder to create the article link.
3. Copy the URL created in the "Article Link" window
4. Edit the URL - Add "0-" before the "www"
5. Edit the URL - ".library.pcc.edu" after the ".org" and before the "/"
6. Paste the URL into desired location
Open Access Journals
Includes all peer-reviewed scientific and scholarly journals that can be accessed free of charge. See: Directory of Open Access Journals
1. Find an article in a journal
2. Copy the URL that displays in the browser address bar
3. Paste the URL into desired location

1. Find an article in an OVID database
2. Select the "Ovid Full Text" link on the right of the screen
3. Select the "Email Jumpstart" link on the right of the screen just below the link to Full Text (PDF)
4. Copy the URL that appears in the "Comments" box
5. Paste the URL into desired location
Oxford Art Online
1. Find an article or image
2. Select "Cite" from the options near the top right of the screen
3. The citation information contains the persistent URL to the article
4. Paste the URL into desired location

This database uses a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) for locating articles.
1. Find an article in Science Direct
2. Look for the DOI at the top of the page on the left side
(Example: doi: 10.1016/0022-1910(82)90103-2)
3. Add the doi (number only) to "http://dx.doi.org/"
(Example: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0022-1910(82)90103-2)
4. Edit the URL - Add "0-" before the "dx"
5. Edit the URL - Add ".library.pcc.edu" after the ".org" and before the "/"
