Finding factual information about a periodical
Ulrich's Periodicals Directory
Ulrich's Periodicals Directory a set of books that provides the name and address of the periodical's publishes, in addition to a brief description and often a review. The editorial or political slant of the publication may or may not be given. It is available online through Multnomah County Library's web site. You must have a MCL library card to access it at MCL's web site.
Magazines for Libraries
The book titled Magazines for Libraries is another good place to learn the focus, mission and alliliations of a wide variety of periodicals. For example, here is some information for the magazine American Spectator:
Circ: 139,000
www.spectator.org
"The American Spectator 'tries to look where the mainstream media don't, whether for reasons of politics or habit.' The articles are sharp, puingent , and definitely demonstrate a libertarian-conservative bias, not unexpected from a publication that has included the Children's Defense Fund on its list of enemies. Features include 'Ben Stein's Diary' and 'The Continuing Crisis,' short news entries from around the world. This title remains a valuable one for libraries seeking to balance their collections.
The magazine's companion web site, called the American Prowler includes a 'coming attractions' version of the current print issue and one or two full-text articles. A very limited archives going back to the Sept/Oct 2002 issue is available; again, only a handful of each issue's articles is availbale. The stie offers daily features and columns, including such gems as 'Enemy of the Week'. 'Political Hay' and The Daily Grind.'
The South East Center tutoring center has a copy of the book Magazines for Libraries. The call number is 050.24 M34 2006. You will need to use it in the tutoring center.
You can also borrow a copy of Magazines for Libraries from the PCC Cascade library, using the PCC library catalog to have it shipped to SE Center. More info about the Tutoring Center at SE Center, including hours.
Magazine or journal articles about specific periodicals
Search the EBSCOhost database called MasterFILE Premier for articles about your periodical. Put the title of the periodical in quotation marks, and select the Subject Terms search field. For example:

This should bring up articles about your periodical, rather than articles published IN your periodical.
To read back issues of magazines the PCC library subscribes to through the computer:
Go to www.pcc.edu/library
Click on the Green "Catalog" tab at the top.
Click on the Magazines/Journals Tab
Enter the name of your publication in the search box, and enter.
Follow the link to read the issues.
Al-jazeera should be used with the search term 'jazeera.' But the website for this TV service is probably easier.
BBC News Online- Backfiles are available by searching BBC Worldwide Monitoring International Reports
Some publications are not available online through the library:
Sojourners, Weekly Standard
General Information about journalism, in books
