Overview
Laptops and other equipment are paid for through technology fees, and therefore are restricted to currently registered PCC students. Laptops may be borrowed from any PCC Library check out desk. A Portland Community College Equipment Use Agreement must be signed by the borrower. This agreement is kept on file in the Library. All agreement terms are in force for every checkout. The borrower is responsible for the laptop until it is returned to Library staff and checked in.
Laptops are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Checkout is limited to one laptop per person for a 2 hour period for use within the Library only. Units must be returned to the check out desk staff.
To Checkout you will need:
- A signed PCC Equipment Use Agreement on file
- Current PCC Student ID with valid term sticker
- Current photo ID such as an Oregon Driver's License or passport
- A thumb drive or some way of saving files.
Where to use the laptop
- Laptop computers may be used anywhere in the PCC Library; however, laptops may not leave the library. If laptops are removed from the library, the borrower may lose the privilege to use a laptop in the future.
- Laptops are checked out with a power cord. We strongly recommend using it rather than the laptop battery. The quick turn around time for checkouts may leave the battery low and result in lost data.
Loan period
- The loan period is 2 hours. Laptops will stop circulating one hour before the closing of the Library. End-of-the day loans must be returned 15 minutes before closing.
- Renewals are generally not allowed. If there are computers available, and no one is waiting, laptops may be checked out for an additional 2 hours.
Overdue charges
- Overdue charges of $5.00 per hour apply if the laptop is not returned on time. There is no grace period. All charges are forwarded to the College Business Office and put directly on the student's account. Students pay charges in the Business Office
- It is the responsibility of the borrower to notify the Library check out desk of any loss, damage or defect immediately upon return of the laptop.
Loan enforcement
- The PCC Library reserves the right to deny checkout privileges indefinitely based on past abuses.
Printing
- You can print your pictures from any Library computer.
- You will need these instructions for wireless printing with Windows XP
- You will need a GoPrint account to print (this comes with a lab account)
- Black and white printing is seven cents ($.07) a page
- Color printing is a twenty five cents ($.25) a page.
Security
- You are responsible for the laptop checked out to you until it is checked back in. The Library is not responsible for loss while the laptop is checked out to you.
- Please do not leave the laptop unattended.
- Personal software may not be loaded onto the laptop. No user files will be retained on the hard disk.
Disclaimer
- PCC is not responsible for damage to any removable drive (i.e. floppy, CD, zip, or flash drive) or loss of data that may occur due to malfunctioning hardware or software
Assistance
- For technical questions using the library laptops, please see the computer lab assistants (in red vests). Assistants are available to support all equipment and computers in the library during most open hours, however it is assumed that if you checkout a laptop that you can operate it without help.
- Library staff, other than lab assistants, are not responsible for instruction in using the laptop.
- Report any hardware or software problems to the computer lab assistants, and in their absence to the Library check out staff.
