Women’s studies collection development policy
The primary intent of the collection is to support the curriculum offerings
of the PCC Women’s Studies Program. This program “explores the decisive role
that gender has played and continues to play in human societies and contributes
to an understanding of women’s lives.”
Collection Guidelines
Dewey Classifications: 305.4, 324, 133.4, 342.087
Languages: English is the principal language of the collection. Materials in Spanish are acquired selectively.
Chronological Coverage: Emphasis is placed on 18th to 21st century issues, with limited coverage of other eras.
Geographical Coverage: Coverage is worldwide with emphasis on North America.
Format: The collection includes primarily books and selected periodicals (print and electronic format).
Treatment of Subject: Materials are acquired which reflect the interdisciplinary nature of women’s studies. Major areas of interest include sociology, history, education, law, health, literature and communication. The women’s studies collection specialist works in close cooperation with subject specialist from these areas to ensure appropriate coverage.
Date of Publication: Current in-print publications receive priority. Selected retrospective publications may be purchased as the budget permits.
Deselection/Replacement: Materials in this collection are reviewed periodically
to determine their relevance to current curriculum needs. A decision to deselect
or replace an item is made based on usage, physical condition, classic status
or consultation with faculty members.
