Collection Statement
The Physical Education department provides instruction in team and individual
sports, aquatics, weight training, dance, fitness and conditioning. It also
offers a 2-year certificate program in Fitness Technology, emphasizing instructional
and administrative responsibilities, fitness testing, basic anatomy and physiology,
nutrition, injury prevention and management, and communication and business
skills. Graduates work in fitness and wellness centers and in health clubs.
Students in Lifeguard Training receive an American Red Cross Training Certificate.
Classes may fulfill requirements at PCC or other colleges and universities,
or may transfer as elective credits. Activities are at the beginning and intermediate
levels in aquatics, dance, individual and team sports, and physical fitness.
Theoretical and practical courses are emphasized in the courses for Fitness
Technology.
The library does not provide materials in every sport offered, but purchases monographs that cover a range of physical activities and sports, sports rules and trivia, and local hiking trail and recreational guides. Some sports psychology titles may be added. Magazines are primarily geared toward general sports and health interests. Videos are particularly helpful for instruction, both for class and individual use. The library encourages input from teaching staff to provide sufficient coverage of the subject area. Most student use of this collection is personal interest, not assignments.
Exclusions: Materials emphasizing general wellness are collected by another
selector.
Popular exercise videos are purchased only when specifically requested; others
are selected through standard review sources. Personal memoirs and biographies
of sports figures and histories of specific teams are not collected, but some
may be selected under special circumstances. Textbooks are not collected.
Types of formats:
Monographs, selected almanacs and encyclopedias, limited reference materials,
videos and journals. Videos are popular as exercise and training models.
