BUILDING INSPECTION PROGRAM

COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT ANALYSIS

Level: Plans exam certificate; one- and two family dwelling code certificate; mechanical inspection certificate; structural inspection certificate

Location: Sylvania

Description: The Building Inspection Program prepares students for various State of Oregon examinations to certify them in for a variety of roles: building plans examiner, residential building inspector, mechanical inspector, and structural inspector. This program is particularly aimed for evening students who may be working in the construction or architectural fields.

Library Support: This program requires the Library to provide a core, current collection of various technical building and construction codes. The purchase of these codes must be kept current because of the critical nature of the state-conducted examinations for which the students sit. Though expensive, the codes are the basis for the entire program and Oregon State examination requirements. The challenge for the Library is where to house these codes since providing them at each campus is cost prohibitive. As a result of consultation with the appropriate SAC Chairs, codes have been assigned to the specific campus libraries based on students served. The codes are primarily located at Sylvania and Rock Creek, with some duplicate codes being housed at Cascade to serve Apprenticeship & Trades students.

Relationship to other PCC Programs: This program operates totally independently of other programs within the college. Its content is compatible, and sometimes duplicative, of content offered in the Architectural Design and Drafting Program, the Apprenticeship and Trades Programs, and the Building Construction Technology Program. As noted previously, these programs are offered at all three campuses and at numerous off-campus and field sites.
