BUILDING CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM
COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT ANALYSIS
Level:
B-FIT: Certificate of Completion [suspended in 2003 due to budget
constraints]
Building Construction: AAS; two-year certificate; one-year certificate
Location: Rock Creek
Description: The Building Construction Technology Program focuses on all areas of construction and requires skills such as framing (floor, wall, roof, and stair), concrete (pouring, finishing, and associated form work), exterior finish (roofing, siding, exterior door and window installation), interior finish (door hanging, trim work, drywall, finished stair construction), and cabinet making. There is also a separate "emphasis track" available within the program for building construction management.
Library Support: These programs require heavy, ongoing support from the Library. Since all programs are offered only at the Rock Creek Campus, materials assignment needs to be in the Rock Creek Library. RS Means Company's publications are critical to support this program, and a three-year rotational purchase update schedule has been agreed upon with the SAC. Videos/DVDs are particularly helpful for students in these programs. The SAC has reviewed journals in the field and established the subscriptions for those titles not available electronically. An analysis of the current Library collection by the SAC Chair has identified many outdated titles. A priority has been established which includes getting the foundation reference collection up-to-date and maintaining its currency, some video/DVD replacements and updates ordered, with a systematic updating of the book collection beginning continuing through 2005. The program will be contributing relevant videos to the Library collection which have previously been housed in a departmental collection. This will expand the availability to program enrollees as well as students in other related programs. Historical treatises are of very limited use in this program.
Relationship to other PCC Programs: There is much content overlap between these programs and the Apprenticeship and Trades Programs. The primary distinction is the Rock Creek program is campus-based whereas the other programs are field-based. Many of the materials purchased for this program will have utility in supporting programs elsewhere in the college, e.g. Architectural Design and Drafting, the Associated General Contractors' Carpenter Apprenticeship Open Shop Program, and the Building Inspection Program.
