Accessing ARTstor from off-campus
Remote Access Grace Period
Unfortunately, not all institutions are able to offer proxy service to their users. Furthermore, proxy servers are only helpful with online resources. ARTstor, for instance, has both online and offline resources, such as the Offline Image Viewer, which cannot utilize proxy servers. Therefore, to successfully connect to ARTstor via the Offline Image Viewer, you will need to be physically located at one of your institution's IP-validated workstations. This has caused some inconvenience for users who would like to use the Offline Image Viewer off campus. For this reason, we have developed an alternative method of remote authentication: the Remote Access Grace Period.
The Remote Access Grace Period allows all registered users temporary access to ARTstor from outside their institutions. This means that each time you log on to your ARTstor account from a valid IP address - i.e. on campus at your institution, or via your institution's proxy server - you are granted 14 days of remote access to ARTstor. After logging on at a valid IP, you will be able to access ARTstor from any computer connected to the Internet for a period of two weeks. During this time, you will also be able to authenticate the Offline Image Viewer program and download your ARTstor Image Groups to any computer. In order to reset the grace period, all you need to do is log on to your ARTstor account again, from on campus or through your institution's proxy server. Doing so will restart the Remote Access Grace Period clock, resetting it to the maximum length of time, 14 days.
Note: Users with Instructor-Level Privileges are granted a 90-day Remote Access Grace Period. By contrast, "regular" Registered Users have the standard 14-day grace period.
During the Remote Access Grace Period, you may go directly to ARTstor's home page, www.artstor.org , and click on the link to "Search and Browse for Images." A new window will pop up, prompting you to enter your ARTstor email address and password. Once you enter this information, ARTstor will check whether or not you have logged on to your account from a valid IP address within the last 14 days. If you have, you may go directly into the ARTstor Digital Library. If your Remote Access Grace Period has expired, you may reset it by logging on to your ARTstor account from on campus or through your institution's proxy server.
Tips for the Remote Access Grace Period

In order to take advantage of the Remote Access Grace Period, you must have already registered an account with ARTstor from a valid IP address within your home institution - whether physically on campus or via the proxy server. You may not register a new account with ARTstor from off campus. Since you would be coming into ARTstor remotely, with an unrecognized IP address, there would be no way for your account to be properly associated with your institution. Each time you log on to your ARTstor account from within your institution (or via your institution's proxy server), you will reset your Remote Access Grace Period to the maximum length - 14 or 90 days. This means that you will be able to access ARTstor from any computer connected to the Internet, located anywhere in the world, for the next 14 or 90 days. You will also be able to authenticate the Offline Image Viewer and/or download your ARTstor Image Groups at any computer. If your Remote Access Grace Period expires, simply log on to your ARTstor account using an campus computer (whether a library terminal, a computer lab workstation, or your office computer), or after connecting to your institution's proxy server. This will reset the clock and renew your Remote Access Grace Period to the full 14 or 90 days. |

If you try to access online ARTstor remotely, when you click on the "Search and Browse for Images" link on www.artstor.org , a new window will open requesting your email address and password. This is the same email address and password that you typically use to log on to your ARTstor account. Enter this information and click the "Submit" button in this form. If you have entered a valid ARTstor user account and you have time remaining in your Remote Access Grace Period, you will be able to enter the ARTstor Digital Library. As you enter, you will be reminded of how many days remain in your grace period. |

If you are using the Offline Image Viewer off campus and need to log in to download your ARTstor Image Groups, enter your email address and password when prompted, as you normally do. For more information about importing ARTstor Image Groups into the Offline Image Viewer, see: " Adding images to your presentation ". Provided that you have logged on to your ARTstor account within the past 14 days - i.e. that you have time remaining in your Remote Access Grace Period - you will see the list of your folder and Image Groups, per usual. You will also be able to use your email address and password to reauthenticate the Offline Image Viewer software when prompted to do so. Note: You must have Offline Image Viewer version 1.2 or higher installed for the Remote Access Grace Period to function properly. When you send your students a link to an image or an Image Group in ARTstor online, clicking on the URL while on campus will take them directly to those images in the Image Viewer. But, if they are off campus, your students will have to perform an extra step before viewing the images. After clicking on the link from an unrecognized off campus IP address, they will be prompted to log on with their ARTstor email address and password. Provided that they have registered an email address and password with ARTstor, and they have accessed this same account in the past 14 days, they will be able to link directly to view those images and/or Image Groups. Please remember that all ARTstor users - whether on campus or off campus - are subject to ARTstor's Terms and Conditions of Use .
