Friends of the Library

The Friends of the PCC Library (FOL) is a volunteer group that supports the library by

  • Funding four $300 Library Prizes yearly for excellence in research
  • Providing an annual $1000 scholarship
  • Purchasing additional books and media to augment library resources
  • Assisting the library with fund-raising efforts
  • Raising awareness of library services across the college community.

Membership

Membership is free, but contributions are encouraged. Send your tax-deductible contribution to: PCC Foundation, PO Box 19000, Portland, OR, 97280-0990. Make checks payable to “Friends of the PCC Library”. You can also donate online at PCC Foundation Give Online. Select “Other” from the designation box then type “Library” in the comment field below. PCC faculty and staff may use payroll deduction to make a continuing donation to the Library Friends. For information about volunteer opportunities, Contact Us.

Valerie Blanton Student Scholarships
The Friends award a $1000 PCC Foundation library scholarship to a PCC student who uses library resources productively. This scholarship provides much needed financial help with tuition, fees, books and other college expenses. Nursing student, Valerie Blanton, was the first student scholarship winner in Fall 2010. Valerie is a busy Mom as well as a PCC student.
The Girl Who Fell From the Sky Book Purchase
In September, 2010, the Friends purchased copies of Heidi Durrow's book, The Girl Who Fell From the Sky, in support of the 2011 PCC Reads program. Look for this book at all campus libraries. Read reviews of this outstanding and award winning first effort by a Portland native in the New York Times Book Review and The Oregonian.
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian book cover Book Purchase
In September, 2009, 25 copies of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian were purchased by the Friends to support the Sylvania Reads program - an initiative to encourage faculty, staff and students to read books that address topics and issues pertaining to diversity.
Library Prize CompetitionLibrary Prize
In May of each year since 2004 the Friends award a Library Prize to students who produce excellent papers for their coursework.  Four students receive cash prizes of $300 each for papers or projects written or produced as class assignments. Winners may be in ESOL, DEV ED, 100 level, and 200 level classes. Read the winning essays on the Library web site.

The Friends co-sponsored a reception for artist, Mary Stupp-Greer. The Sylvania Library has a permanent display of Stupp-Greer's series of paintings called the Peace Parable Series. The Friends are looking for opportunities to co-sponsor events that are revelant to libraries and books. Contact Us and let's talk.
Belleweather book jacket Book Purchase
In the digital age, books continue to be the cornerstone of most libraries. The Friends enjoy and support creative and scholarly writing in electronic and print form. They have purchased several collections of books including books on Asia for a new international studies program, modern prize-winning literature for the Cascade library, current writing on African-American history for the opening of the Jackson Reading Room at the Cascade library, and many titles on staff want lists.
Art in the Library Art in the Library
Each PCC Library has a good collection of fine art in various media. The Friends created library art guides for each campus and distributed a brochure during Art Beat 2011. Artist Bob Dozono led a tour of Sylvania library art.
Starving Artist Exhibit Starving Artists Exhibit
This event included original art for sale, a reading by best-selling author Jennifer Lauck, wine, and hors d'oeuvres. Stylish book bags were sold, featuring the work of artist Bobbie Jansen's Density of Life.
