In September 2007 Campus Compact and the Fidelity® Charitable Gift Fund announced an alliance to educate and inspire a future generation of philanthropists in a new era of giving. Portland Community College was one of five academic institutions in the nation to receive $15,000 to create a donor advised fund to offer grants to non-profit organizations within their communities.

Last year the Portland Community College’s Students4Giving Project was a collaborative effort between a Social Issues and Movements sociology course and an Introduction to Accounting business course, linking both course and community-based knowledge. Students4Giving participants analyzed grant applications from 14 local non-profit organizations and selected 4 proposals for a total of $10,000 in grants. Students4Giving also advised the City of Portland’s Vision into Action Coalition with the awarding of $9,900 in Youth Action Grants.

This year the Youth Action Grant project will continue through an Introduction to Accounting (BA111) course in the winter of 2009. The more intensive non-profit grant cycle will be held through the new Introduction to the Nonprofit Sector (BA199) course in the spring. If you are a student interested in participating, enroll in one of these two classes.

How Can I Get Involved?

If you are student interested in participating, enroll in one or both of these classes:

  • Introduction to Accounting (BA111) course in the winter of 2009
  • Introduction to the Nonprofit Sector (BA199) course in the spring

Our Mission

The Portland Community College’s Students4Giving mission is to educate participating students in the field of charitable giving by identifying and allocating funds to local non-profits that strive to solve certain social problems, have a strong impact, and demonstrate financial need. By developing sustainable relationships between students, the college, non-profits, and the community, the efforts of our project will create a lasting impact, beckoning in a new era of philanthropy.
