TITLE: Technology Specialist II
EXEMPT STATUS: Non-exempt
NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK:
Under the direction of Information Technology Services (ITS) management, incumbent supports network and/or computer systems with moderate-to-high complexity, such as Client-Server, FTP, e-mail and web servers. Provides technical support and leadership in the area of data communications networks for systems and networks and servers for systems located throughout PCC's district. The incumbent performs network, server and system planning, installation and management support activities. Plans, installs and maintains new and existing systems and provides technical guidance and assistance to users as well as to others in ITS. Helps develop requirements and detailed specifications and works according to those requirements and specifications. Writes support and procedure documents; designs and implements security procedures. Works independently under specified objectives and applies advance trouble-shooting techniques to identify, diagnose and correct network and server system problems; obtains advice and provides direction when precedents are unclear or unavailable.
INTENT: This is the second level of a three-tiered job family where the incumbent is responsible for developing, modifying and maintaining moderately complex server and network systems.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: (Includes all or some of the following)
- Supports Internet-related, groupware related (e.g., email), LAN/WAN related servers and applications. Duties include implementation, developing concepts and documentation, daily monitoring of system performance, checking and analyzing log files of operating systems and appropriate applications (e.g. HTTP/Listserve, Virtual Server systems, FTP server, etc.) log files. This also includes the use of diagnosis tools and utilities to resolve system problems.
- Manages security aspects affecting assigned area including analysis of appropriate log file entries and analyzing appropriate applications (e.g. email, HTTP server, Listserv, FTP server, etc.). Interprets log file anomalies and takes appropriate corrective and/or preventative actions.
- Analyzes business problems and, where appropriate, proposes technologies, processes, service, applications and/or tools to meet business requirements.
- Ensures integration between systems, identifies standards, coordinates projects, and prioritizes projects and activities within established processes and teams.
- Supports end users by developing reporting tools, supplying training and technical support and/or documentation and creating a user-friendly environment that promotes self-sufficiency. Orients user personnel on new or changed procedures. May provide functional direction to technical staff and/or student employees.
- Configures, tests, troubleshoots and corrects network and server components and problems. Proactively monitors and manages network and server hardware and software. Gathers and analyzes data to help with decisions related to performance, capacity, and fault tolerance. Helps maintain network and server configuration and performance records. Inputs information regarding network and server components and configuration.
- Works with PCC technical staff, customer representatives, vendors and contractors to provide network/server consulting and assistance with planning activities and equipment repair and replacement.
- Manages the specification, purchasing, installation and configuration of LAN and application servers and networking equipment. Manages LAN/WAN network and computer resources efficiently to provide maximum throughput and maintain good system response. Tasks include using LAN software to analyze system performance; conducting research in resolving problems; and verifying resources are being used in a judicious manner.
- Maintains up-to-date computer skills and stays current with developments in networking and server technology and recommends ways for PCC to take advantage of new technology and procedures.
- May perform any of the duties of a Technology Specialist I.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work schedule requirements include early and late hours and weekends to meet timelines, provide off-hour maintenance, and respond to emergency situations. Must provide own transportation for travel between campuses and off-site locations.
Work is performed in an office environment with frequent interruptions and work pressure due to multiple priorities and deadlines. Exposure to video display terminals occurs on a regular basis. The work environment also includes high computer-related noise levels (may require use of ear plugs), paper and equipment generated dust and exposure to cleaning fluids and other materials for cleaning equipment.
Position involves some medium to heavy lifting. Routine standing, walking and lifting of equipment (30-50 pounds). Learned physical skill for keyboarding and operating complex network and computing equipment.
Associate's degree in a computer or other related technical discipline. Relevant experience may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis. Two years of applied work experience in server and/or network support services are also required. Must possess state-of-the-art knowledge of computer network and/or server technology such as TCP/IP, Microsoft Windows, UNIX, LINUX and NetWare, and be familiar with hardware and software diagnostics. The above-mentioned qualifications could be demonstrated by possessing one of the following certifications:
Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA)
Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)
Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
Knowledge of: System software for error handling and recovery; and computer system hardware and peripheral devices.
