Vocational Trainer

Nature and Scope of Work

The Vocational Trainer is responsible for providing training and workshops to Workforce Development clients/students who have a need to increase their proficiency in workplace ESL, occupational math and/or basic computer skills.  Incumbents work collaboratively with WorkSource Staff to gain an understanding of client/student needs and implement plans and projects.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Provide training to adult students who have varying levels of English language proficiency, using Workplace English Workshop curriculum.
  2. Follow daily lesson plans according to appropriate timelines, adjusting curriculum when necessary.
  3. Provide workshop facilitation at locations that are demand driven.
  4. Collaborate closely with WorkSource staff including WorkSource Manager, Employment Specialist, Administrative Assistant and Training Assistants on individual student planning and projects, as needed.
  5. Provide information and encouragement to students regarding issues of employment, attendance, and attitude, as necessary, coordinating closely with the Worksource staff and manager.
  6. Report student behavioral issues to the WorkSource Manager.
  7. Assist students with reaching rigorous job-readiness goals regarding job applications, resumes, interviewing techniques and job search strategies.  Coordinate classroom work with activities.
  8. Disseminate program information, including travel policy, job leads, field trips/ maps, and any other program information, monitor and track classroom supplies; coordinate with WorkSource Administrative Assistant regarding supply needs.
  9. Track and email weekly classroom attendance and next steps on a spreadsheet, provided by the WorkSource Administrative Assistant, and send to the WorkSource Manager.
  10.  Perform related duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Work is typically performed in an office environment. Incumbents regularly drive to WorkSource sites which requires the use of a personal vehicle. Occasional evening and weekend hours is required.

Physical Requirements

Physical exertion is not a normal requirement of this job.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in relevant content area of vocational curriculum, adult education, or related field.  Experience performing the duties of this job may substitute for the degree requirement on a year for year basis.

Demonstrated work experience providing training to adults in relevant content area of vocational curriculum (ESL, healthcare, construction, office skill technology, institutional food service, direct care worker, customer service, high-tech manufacturing, etc.).

Knowledge of:
  • Knowledge of effective training techniques and adult learning theory.
Ability to:
  • Ability to counsel students one-on-one about job readiness, career goals and job search strategies. Ability to prioritize or to change priorities quickly and frequently. Ability to work with an ethnically and culturally diverse population. Ability to operate a variety of office equipment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in oral and written form. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Ability to set boundaries, particularly with adult students. Ability to follow-through with students, staff and employers. Skill in operating a computer and various supporting software packages. Skill in effective group facilitation.
