Course Description

Introduces knowledge and skills in beginning modern dance technique. Includes dance fundamentals, vocabulary, and improvisation, emphasizing correct alignment, coordination, strength, and awareness of movement. Course may be taken 3 times for credit (D 192C or PE 186I separately or in combination).

Intended Outcomes for the course

  1. Develop basic modern dance skills and kinesthetic awareness in modern dance technique.
  2. Identify and apply the principles of modern dance technique and vocabulary.
  3. Explore and appreciate modern dance as an art form.

  1. Modern Dance Class, beginning level:

  2. Axial movements
  3. Ballet based movements: plies, battements, rond de jambe
  4. Floor work
  5. Connecting movements

  9. Structure of modern dance class
  10. Dance class etiquette

  1. Use of weight and breath
