Course Description

Develops skills needed to teach alpine skiing. American Teaching System progression will be taught from first day through open parallel turns. Skills concept, demonstrations, class safety and handling, movement analysis and limited practice teaching will be covered. Recommended: Advanced Alpine Skiing or equivalent. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This is NOT a certification program for alpine ski instruction
which can only be conducted by the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA), but a
certificate of completion will be given to all students attending all of the classes.
In addition to the cost of tuition, the student will pay package fees to the ski area for lessons, lift
tickets, rental equipment and bus transportation depending upon their individual needs.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  1. Develop knowledge of the American Teaching System (ATS) progression and the skills of skiing as they are applied at each level from first day on skis through beginning parallel.
  2. Perform maneuvers and applicable exercises to alpine skiing
  3. Demonstrate the skills of balance, turning, pressure and edging
  4. Identify proper and ineffective application of the key skills of turning, pressuring, and edging
  5. Demonstrate effective application of the desired skill to the skier
  6. Provide exercises to correct or enhance skill application to allow successful performance of the maneuver

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

SUBJECT MATTER: CONCEPTS, THEMES, ISSUES (TOPICAL AREAS)

  1. Introduction of the American Teaching System (ATS)
  2. Safe use of equipment ; all lifts and proper operation of the binding system
  3. Introduce effective class sessions
  4. Choosing terrain appropriate for student skill level
  5. Snow conditions and how they affect the approach of the lesson
  6. Safe position of the class on a hill
  7. First Aid and the instructor's responsibility
  8. Different class formation; line up, bunch, double line, and huddle

COMPETENCIES/SKILLS:

  1. Demonstrate balanced skier stance
  2. Demonstrate walking
  3. Demonstrate falling safely and getting up
  4. Demonstrate turning around
  5. Demonstrate climbing uphill
  6. Demonstrate gliding wedge and braking wedge
