Course Description

Introduces a self-paced walking program as a lifelong fitness activity that maintains and enhances physical fitness and well-being. Provides basic information and tools needed to understand, organize, plan, and implement a physical fitness program that features walking as the primary activity. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Student provides appropriate sport clothing activity. Sport shoes designed for walking are required.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Apply the components of an effective physical fitness program, utilizing walking as the primary activity. 
  2. Improve physical conditioning by participating in a regular walking program.
  3. Perform basic fitness walking techniques.
  4. Apply proper technique to set pacing for safe and effective walking for fitness.

  1. Recognize/develop skills for holistic health
  2. Understand how walking promotes psychological well-being

  1. Warm-ups, cool-downs
  2. Target heart rate zone training
  3. Perceived rate of exertion technique
  4. Pace/speed setting for walking
  5. Components of fitness
  6. Appreciation and benefits of lifelong fitness
  7. Safety concepts


COMPETENCIES/SKILLS:

  1. Practice warm-ups, cool-downs
  2. Demonstrate correct exercises for individual program
  3. Apply components of fitness to beginning levels
  4. Apply present physical condition to appropriate walking levels
  5. Alter exercise choices for special weather and physical conditions
  6. Understand muscle charts in selecting appropriate /walking fitness endurance & flexibility exercises
