Course Description

Applied Percussion

Intended Outcomes for the course

The material for the course will be presented in a lab/demonstration format.

Students will be required to perform each quarter in a student recital.

Students will be able to demonstrate good sound production, rhythmic precision, technical development, scales, chords, phrasing and musicianship.

 

Outcome Assessment Strategies


Methods used to evaluate student progress and the criteria for assigning a course grade should be made clear by the instructor at the beginning of the course. The individual instructor will determine the method of assessment. Assessment methods may include:

Qualitative and/or quantitative examinations

Weekly performance assignments

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

SUBJECT MATTER:

First Year Required Materials:

Snare Drum: Completion of Garwood Whaley’s Musical Studies for the Intermediate Drummer. Basic snare drum rudiments.

Mallets: Completion of Garwood Whaley’s Fundamental Studies for Mallets. Major and minor scales and triads. Knowledge of four mallet technique.

Tympani: Be able to tune the drums. Knowledge of rolls, legato, and staccato strokes.

Percussion Accessories: Knowledge of triangle, tambourine, cymbals, etc.

Suggested Repertoire: Selected solos for snare and mallet instrument.

Second Year Required Materials:

Snare Drum: Anthony J. Cirone - Portrait of Rhythm.

Mallets: Morris Goldenberg - Modern School for Xylophone, Marimba, and Vibraphone.

Timpani: The Friese-Lepak Timpani Method.

Suggested Repertoire: Four mallet piece and a Vic Firth Etude or equivalent.

COMPETENCIES/SKILLS
The following skills are to be achieved to successfully meet the minimum requirement (“C” or “Pass”) for the course:
First Year:

Demonstrate percussion basics: Instrument position, grip, striking areas, controlling sound production, tuning, rhythmical and rudimental techniques, phrasing and musicianship.

All major and minor scales and triads

Demonstrate tambourine regular rolls, thumb rolls, finger playing; maracas, claves, cow bell, guiro, triangle, and wood block

Sight Reading College Entrance Level Material

Appearance on a recital or jury

Second Year:

Demonstrate continued development of percussion basics.

Major, whole tone, harmonic and melodic minor scales and triads

Perform pieces from at least two different percussion instruments

Sight Reading First Year Level Material

Appearance on a recital or jury
