#### Course Description

Introduces basic use of graphing calculators. Explores the power of graphing calculators' computer algebra systems. The TI-89 (or TI-92 or Voyage 200) or Casio ClassPad 330 graphing calculator is required. Prerequisite: MTH 60 or equivalent placement. Audit available.#### Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion, students should be able to:

Confidently use the TI-89 or Casio ClassPad 330 calculator

Assessment must include:

1. Attend 80% or more of class meetings for pass consideration.

2. At least one or more of the following measures:

The course is only offered using the Pass/No Pass option.

**1.0 CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CALCULATOR:**

1.1 Know the calculator’s major interfaces.

1.1.1 (TI specific) Know the calculator’s home screen, command line, menus, Cursor, 2

^{nd}, Alpha, Green-diamond, and HOME keys.1.1.2 (Casio specific) Know the calculator’s icon panel, soft keyboard, hard keyboard, main screen.

1.2 Adjust the contrast.

1.3 Interpret the status indicators (e.g. radian/degree mode or battery status).

1.4 Understand how to store values into variables and clear variables.

1.5 Know how to get exact and approximate values.

1.7 Explore the available mode settings.

1.8 Know how to navigate catalog features.

1.9 Know how to revert calculator to factory default settings.

1.10 Explore capabilities of calculator applications.

1.11 (Casio specific) Know how to calibrate touch screen.

1.12 (Casio specific) Change settings by tapping status bar items (e.g. Standard, Real, Rad).

**2.0 EVALUATING ARITHMETIC AND FORMULA EXPRESSIONS:**

2.1 Use the basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, opposites, roots, and exponents.

2.2 Differentiate between subtraction and negative buttons.

2.3 Understand that the calculator evaluates expressions according to the order of operations (e.g. complex fractions and radicals).

2.4 Be able to use the parentheses as grouping symbols.

2.5 Be able to read, input, and interpret numbers in scientific notation.

2.6 (Casio specific) Be able to use 2D tab.

**3.0 EDITING ARITHMETIC OR FORMULA EXPRESSIONS:**

3.1 Reuse previous inputs and outputs.

3.1.1 (TI specific) Be able to use both 2

^{nd}Enter feature and arrow keys.3.1.2 (Casio specific) Be familiar with drag-and-drop feature.

3.2 Use the arrow pad to move cursor throughout an expression that requires editing.

3.2.1 Use the cut/copy/paste features.

3.2.2 Know how to delete, clear, and insert.

3.2.3 Understand the tool bar options.

3.3 (Casio specific) Know the difference between Action and Interactive menu items.

**4.0 USER-DEFINED FUNCTIONS**

4.1 DEFINE functions.

4.2 Evaluate, simplify and solve user-defined functions.

**5.0 GRAPHING**

5.1 Input and edit an equation in the equation editor (Y=).

5.1.1 Use “|” to define restricted domains (e.g. y=2x+3 | x> -2 and x<4).

5.2 Adjust window dimension settings.

5.3 Use the F5-Math (TI-89) or Analysis/G-Solve (Casio) menu features for a graph.

5.3.1 TRACE (and its limitations),

5.3.2 Evaluate at a given input,

5.3.3 ZERO to find x-intercept,

5.3.4 Find MAXIMUM/MINIMUM values,

5.3.5 (Casio specific)

• Max/Min – local,

• fMax/fMin – global (The point doesn’t need to be on screen),

5.3.6 INTERSECTION

5.4 Use Zoom menu features for a graph (e.g. Box, Standard, Square, Fit).

5.5 Adjust table settings to create a table of specific values.

**6.0 SOLVE EQUATIONS**

6.1 Use SOLVE feature to solve equations.

6.2 Use the graphing option to display the graphs and the solutions.

6.3 Use SOLVE feature to solve inequalities. Include calculator limitations such as absolute value inequalities.

**ADDITIONAL TOPICS**(1 to 2 of these topics should be covered, instructor’s choice)

The goal is to provide additional topics relevant to the students’ areas of study. The instructor should supplement the core-required topics (items 1 – 6) with one or two of the following topics.

*** 7.0 PLOTTING DATA**

7.1 Input, edit and delete a set of ordered pairs. Be able to delete entire column by putting cursor on top of the

file name.

7.2 Draw a scatter plot, a box plot, and a histogram.

7.3 Change the icon used to plot points.

7.4 Plot different sets of ordered pairs simultaneously.

7.5 Find a graph of various regression functions.

*** 8.0 PROGRAMMING:**

8.1 Write, input and run a simple program.

8.2 Transfer programs from one calculator to another.

8.3 Download, install, and run programs from the TI web site.

8.4 Upgrade the operating system.

*** 9.0 USING LISTS:**

9.1 Know how to input a list and store it to a variable.

9.2 Use a list of parameters to study the changes that occur to an

equation (e.g. y =0.3x + b , where b = {2, 4, 5, 10})

9.3 Explore the operations that can be performed to a list.

***10.0 APPLICATIONS AND DOWNLOADS**

10.1 (TI-89 specific) Use the Apps’ Polynomial Root Finder application.

10.2 (TI-89 specific) Use the Apps’ Simultaneous Equations Solver.

10.3 (TI-89 specific) Use the Unit Conversion feature.

10.3.1 Explore the different conversion units available.

10.3.2 Understand the different symbols used on the edit line for conversion between units.

10.3.3 Use the temp( ) function.

10.4 Download additional resources from Texas Instrument or Casio website.
