Course Description
Develop proficiency in identification and care of equipment, sterile technique and asepsis, diagnostic and examination procedures, therapy, surgery, medication (pharmacology and administration) and handling of medical emergencies in a medical clinic/physician office setting. Concurrent enrollment in MA 131 and MA 136. Department permission required. Prerequisite: MA 123, 124; MLT 100; MP 104; HE 112.Course Activities and Design
Students are assigned to one office during the second term of the Medical Assisting program. The assignment in each office is for a eight week rotation. The offices are selected by the course instructor. Insofar as possible, student requests for assignment will be taken into consideration. Office assignment will be scheduled for one eight-hour shift per week in accordance with the program schedule. Hours of assignment are based on office requirements and will be indicated on a schedule published by the course instructor.
Students are required to wear uniforms conforming to the requirements set forth by the PCC Medical Assisting Program. Apparel should consist of a navy blue lab jacket with a name badge, radiation badge, a white uniform (top and pants or dress) and white duty shoes. These items are purchased by the student in accordance with the guidelines provided by the course instructor.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Student performance is evaluated by the supervisor to whom the student is assigned at the medical office.
The grading system utilized for the course is “Pass” or “No Pass”. In order to receive a “Pass” grade, the student must:
1. Satisfactorily complete the objectives listed for the administrative Medical Office Assistant.
2. Receive satisfactory evaluations from each of the work area supervisors.
3. Complete all of the time assigned. (64 hours)
Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
The goals are to enable the student to: 1. Gain actual experience in physicians’ offices. Instructional Objectives: 1.1 Aseptic technique - students will practice skills in handwashing, wrapping autoclaving instruments, sterilization techniques, disposing of biohazardous materials, and standard precautions. 1.2 Infection control - students will learn and practice utilizing different infection control methods. 1.3 Interview technique -utilize proper usage of all aspects of interviewing processes 1.4 Vital signs - Utilize skills learned in clinical lab and apply them to patients. 1.5 Access emergencies - understand how to access emergencies when in a clinical setting. 1.6 Prepare and maintain exam and treatment rooms - utilize skills learned in clinical lab to prepare and maintain exam and treatment rooms. 1.7 Prepare patients and assist physician - utilize skills learned in clinical lab to prepare and assist physicians. 1.8 Teach preventive health care - students will be able to access and instruct preventative health issues to patients 1.9 Instruct patients with special needs - understand how to deal with patients with special needs 1.10 Inventory - understand the inventory system and learn how to maintain it. 1.11 Maintain office - Daily activities in this module will encompass all aspects of general office maintenance. 2.0 PERFOM LAB TESTS 2.1 Collect and process specimens - students will collect and process urine samples 2.2 Perform tests - students will perform hematology, chemistry, immunology, and microbiology tests 2.3 Follow-up with test results - students will contact patients and give them the outcome properly. 2.4 Quality control - student will maintain quality control while performing and collecting tests. 3.0 MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION 3.1 Prepare medication - students will prepare injectables and oral medications/vaccines 3.2 Administer medication - students will aid in administer medication either orally, rectally or by injection 3.3 Maintain record - students will document all medications given to patient appropriately in the patients charts. 3.4 Dispose of controlled substance - students will dispose of all controlled substances using the guidelines of their medical office.
2. Make the transition from theory to practice as a clinical medical office assistant, under the close supervision of experienced practitioners
3. Gain direct experience working with experienced office personnel in the clinical portion of a medical office.
4. Observe working relationships in the medical office.
