Course Description

Covers best practices for interpreters in K-12 settings, including roles and responsibilities of interpreters and other members of the educational team, qualifications, characteristics of Deaf learners, theories of language acquisition, legislation, and technology. Includes discussion of current research in the field. Prerequisites: Program admission and department permission.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Work effectively as a member of an educational team using appropriate logistics, terminology, and roles.

  • Identify appropriate skills and qualifications necessary for interpreters working in K-12 settings.

  • Identify varying consumer needs and perspectives in a given scenario, with considerations for grade-level, social or behavioral factors, co-occurring disabilities or diagnosis, language background, and funds of knowledge. 

  • Demonstrate an understanding of how the professional code of ethics applies to a given scenario.

  • Explain relevant laws and interpreting research that impact an interpreter's roles and responsibilities. 

Course Activities and Design

This course will consist of lecture, discussion, and case studies. 

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will be evaluated through homework assignments, discussions, quizzes, and case study analysis.
