Course Description

Work on approved job sites where student will receive as varied and complete an experience as possible under job conditions. Credits are variable and based on the number of clock hours student spends on job site. Must be coordinated with supervisor, instructor, and cooperative education specialist. Department permission required.

Addendum to Course Description

This course is required for a One-Year Certificate and an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Building Inspection Technology.   Transferability of credit depends entirely upon the institution to which the student wishes to transfer.   The Building Inspection Department should be consulted with respect to the cost of materials for this course.   Students must be capable of reading and communicating in the English language and may be required to pass a listening competency test administered by the department.  Students who may have a disability and wish an accommodation should make arrangements to meet with the instructor outside of class to discuss specific requests.  Any request for accommodation may require that documentation of disability be reviewed by the Office for Students with Disabilities.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Develop and maintain a field experience which is directly related to the student's college studies.   Provide a smooth and beneficial experience for the student, employer, and the college utilizing a written agreement.   Provide for an evaluation of the field experience.

Course Activities and Design

The student, coordinator/instructor, and the employer/supervisor will develop a practical work experience plan, which will meet the learning needs of the student.  This plan (Learning Objectives Form) provides a definition of the on-the-job learning activities.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Evaluation generally consists of a site visit/s by the Coordinator/instructor and a written evaluation by the employer/supervisor.

1. Field experience plan.
   1. Identify student and employer needs.
   2. Apply job inspection techniques.
   3. Develop skills in preparing for an inspection/plans exam
   4. Promote linkages between the class experience, field experience, and the practical exam.
2. Student contracts and accountability.
   1. Develop criteria for student attendance.
   2. Identify an evaluation of the student.
   3. Identify time commitments.
   4. Identify work performance.
   5. Identify required documents to be maintained by student.
   6. Identify the monitoring of student progress.
