Course Description

A study of the design elements and principles as applied to interiors. Includes skill development in drawing floor plans, analyzing furniture arrangement, and basic techniques for creating interior design presentation boards including floor plans, color boards, and elevation drawings. Prerequisites/concurrent: ARCH 110. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This is the entry-level course for the interiors program and is a prerequisite to all other required studio courses, and/or those classes that require that a student be able to create basic drafted drawings, and understand scale and measurement.

Intended Outcomes for the course

On completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Create a comprehensive set of formal professional presentation boards that demonstrate an understanding of the following: how to write a basic client program, use and execution of drafted and scaled plans and elevation drawings, creation of a well designed furniture plan, and presentation of materials and surfaces.
  2. Understand the design elements and principles and their application to interiors.
  3. Recognize the importance of developing a client program and its relationship to the design process.

Course Activities and Design

This course will be presented by means of lecture, discussion, visuals, and demonstrations. The student€™s grade will be determined by a combination of studio exercises, testing, and class participation.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. Create a professionally presented design journal demonstrating skill in recognizing the design elements and principles
  2. Create a comprehensive set of formal professional presentation boards that include the following: a client program, drafted and scaled floor plans and elevation drawings, a well designed furniture plan, and materials and surfaces.
  3. Participate in, and contribute to, all class discussions and studio sessions.
  4. Understand the importance of and be able to apply a variety of techniques to create effective communication tools appropriate to the industry

Skills:
The student will develop the following skills through this course:

  1. Take as-built measurements from an existing residence and use to draw a scaled floor plan utilizing appropriate architectural symbols
  2. Draw an architecturally appropriate elevation
  3. Plan and draw a furniture plan using effective space planning concepts
  4. Understand the importance of professionalism in all presentations and develop techniques to create a variety of presentation types
  5. Recognize the elements and principles of design in interiors and related
