Course Description

Introduces the fundamentals of diagnostic and treatment medical devices. Includes basic troubleshooting techniques and routine maintenance. Prerequisites: (EET 113 and EET 123), MP 111 and (BI 120 or BI 122 or BI 233). Prerequisites/concurrent: EET 221. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Understand the key clinical needs that medical devices address, both from a diagnostic and therapeutic perspective.
  • Perform operation, troubleshooting, routine preventive maintenance, and safety inspections for medical devices.
  • Identify key medical device technology characteristics, method of measurement and/or therapy.
  • Understand the key components of a Medical Equipment Management Program, regulations, compliance requirements, biomedical engineering technician role and responsibilities including introduction to service contracting. 

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Students will complete assignments, projects, take tests and other activities over the lectured material.

  • Students will have hands-on projects to study and troubleshoot medical devices when applicable.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

  • Fundamental technology review of medical devices

  • Technical and User literature review for medical devices

  • Medical Equipment Management Program as a tool with an introduction to service contracting.

  • Regulatory codes and compliance requirements for hospitals as it relates to medical devices. 

  • Basic troubleshooting and routine maintenance as well as root cause analysis for equipment failures for the following devices: 

physiological monitoring systems, pacemakers, defibrillators, lasers, artificial hearts, ventricular assist devices, intraortic balloon pumps, heart lung machines, fluid warmers, central stations, telemetry, ECG machines, ventilators, stress machines, oximeters, CO2 monitors, blood chemistry analyzers, doppler detectors, pulmonary function analyzers, spirometers, O2 analyzers, anesthesia machines, EEG machines, dialysis machines, nerve stimulators, scopes, fetal monitoring, incubators, bilirubin therapy, ESU, sterilizers and telemedicine.
