Course Description

Offers practical experience in rehearsing and presenting a dance performance. Course may be taken 3 times for credit. Recommended courses: Previous dance training or audition.

Addendum to Course Description

Students will gain first-hand experience in the preparation and presentation of a dance and/or musical theatre performance.   Students may have the opportunity to assist with choreography or other production elements.  Students must provide their own dancewear and shoes.    

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Gain experience in dance and/or musical theater performance.

  • Improve dance skills and expand movement vocabulary.

  • Develop productive rehearsal and performance techniques.

  • Increase awareness and appreciation for dance as a performing art.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Fundamental dance techniques:

  • Correct alignment

  • Body, leg, and arm positions

  • Dance vocabulary

  • Warm-up sequences: standing, on the floor, travelling

  • Proper and safe movement techniques

Dance rehearsals:

  • Proper attire and shoes

  • Warm-up specific to the choreographic content

  • Development of dance steps, phrases, and sequences

  • Musical cues and rhythmic awareness

  • Use of space and staging

  • Run-thrus of completed dance numbers or pieces

  • Entrances and exits

  • Appropriate rehearsal behavior and etiquette

  • Rehearsal preparation and focus

  • Motivation and discipline

  • Taking notes and applying corrections  

Dance choreography and style:

  • Choreographic intent—communication of theme or story

  • Expression of character through movement

  • Choreographic style—time period, dance idiom, signature movements

  • Use of dynamics and energy

Technical/Dress rehearsals and performances:

  • Backstage and dressing room behavior

  • Care of costumes and props

  • Specific make-up and hair requirements

  • Adequate warm-up and preparation

  • Technical run-thru

  • Dress rehearsals

  • Address problems; take corrections and notes

  • Final dress rehearsal

  • Performance  

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Recognize and demonstrate proper dance techniques.
  • Practice and apply appropriate dance skills in dance and/or musical theater choreography.
