Course Description

Continues development of modern dance technique, with focus on alignment, strength, control, musicality, and dynamics. Includes expanded modern dance vocabulary, dance combinations, and improvisation. Course may be taken 3 times for credit (D 192D or PE 186J separately or in combination). Recommended courses: D 192C or PE 186I or equivalent.

Intended Outcomes for the course

·         Develop and increase beginning/intermediate skills and movement awareness in modern dance technique.

·         Identify and apply the principles of modern dance technique and vocabulary.

·         Explore and appreciate modern dance as an art form.

Principles of Modern Dance Technique:

            Correct alignment

            Turnout and parallel positions of the legs and feet

            Body and arm positions

            Modern dance vocabulary

            Safe and efficient dance techniques

Modern Dance Class, beginning/intermediate level:

            Warm-up

            Axial movements

            Ballet based movements: plies, battements, rond de jambe

            Floor work

            Connecting movements

            Locomotor movements

            Dance combinations

            Improvisation and movement exploration

Structure of modern dance class

Dance class etiquette

Modern Dance Aesthetics:

            Use of weight and breath

            Energy and dynamics of movement

            Rhythmic variations

Demonstrate correct technique and appropriate skills in beginning/intermediate modern dance steps and combinations:

Demonstrate modern dance steps and combinations with changes in dynamics, level, and direction.

Demonstrate improved control, strength, balance, musicality, and quality of movement in modern dance.

Demonstrate ability to learn, execute, and retain modern dance steps and combinations from visual, aural, and kinesthetic cues with greater speed and accuracy.

Demonstrate awareness of the components of a movement phrase.

Examine and articulate ideas about a dance performance.

Present a paper or report on modern dance.
