Course DescriptionIntroduces alphabetic portion of computer keyboard by touch. Uses the numeric portion of the keyboard. Develops and improves basic keyboarding techniques to increase speed and accuracy. Involves production of basic business and academic documents using a word processor. Recommended: Placement into RD 90 and WR 90 or above. Audit available.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon successful completion of this course, student will be able to:
1. Keyboard by touch the alphabetic portion of the computer keyboard and be introduced to the numeric portion following current professional
and/or industry standards.
2. Use Microsoft Word to create basic business and academic documents following current professional and/or industry standards.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
A letter grade will be issued for this course based upon:
Visual technique checks
- Eyes on copy
- Correct fingering
- Correct posture
· Timed production tests on business and academic documents.
· Three-minute timed writings with speed and accuracy rates according to the following scale:

35+ A 0 2
28-34 B 3
20-27 C 4 5
15-19 D 6 - 7
May also include other assessment tasks.
Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
- Understand the importance of touch keyboarding
- Learn correct keyboarding techniques
- Correctly format business and academic documents
- Learn to proofread documents and use proofreaders symbols
- Obtain an introduction to word processing
· Touch keyboarding of alphabetic keys at minimum speed and accuracy levels.
· Touch keyboarding of parts of the auxiliary keyboard.
· Apply correct keyboarding techniques and safety techniques of relaxation and exercise to prevent computer-related disabilities such as carpal tunnel and eyestrain.
· Demonstrate safe use and handling of hardware and software.
· Keyboarding of the number row and selected symbols with proper fingering.
· Identify and understand proofreaders marks to edit documents.
