Course Description

Covers analyzing target market, developing retail marketing mix elements, and reviewing store planning techniques used by retailers. Includes discussions of changing retailing environment and impact of government regulations. Prerequisites: WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Credit will be acceptable as a required and/or elective for Portland
Community College's Business Administration Certificate or Degree Programs.
This course may be transferable to four-year colleges and universities.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: 

  • Use their understanding of the history of retailing to inform development of contemporary retail strategy.

  • Articulate and implement industry standard approaches to the site selection, store planning, and visual merchandising.

  • Develop a merchandise plan and budget.

  • Understand and apply the promotional elements of retailing.

  • Identify the environmental factors that impact retailing and develop short and long-term plans to address existing and emerging issues.

Course Activities and Design

Activities to enhance student learning may vary by instructor. Items may include: lecture and class discussions, guest speakers, out-of-class assignments of textbook problems, cases, and discussion questions, and a retailing project which may be a written and/or oral presentation by the student.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

A letter grade is issued for this course. Evaluation procedures for determining student progress will be discussed the first week of the class. The methods may include one or more of the following tools: examinations, quizzes, out-of-class assignments, attendance/class participation, and written/oral presentations.

  2. Understand current retail environmental factors.
  3. Identify career paths and human resource planning.
  4. Explain the various types of retail institutions.

Organize the approach to site selection, store planning, and visual merchandising.
 

  1. Discuss factors in choosing a site.
  2. Select an appropriate site.
  3. Plan store layout and design.
  4. Create elements for exterior and interior displays.
  5. Develop a plan for use of fixtures.


Develop a merchandise plan and budget.
 

  1. Describe merchandise policies and goals.
  2. Complete a six-month merchandise plan.
  3. Discuss the merchandise and vendor selection process.
  4. Understand inventory control systems.
  5. Identify factors affecting merchandise prices.


Explain the promotional elements in retailing
 

  1. Identify the types of retail advertising.
  2. Understand the factors of media selection.
  3. Develop an advertising plan and budget.
  4. Develop a sales promotion calendar of events.
  5. Explain the use of public relations.
  6. Create a retail sales team.


Review the factors that impact retailing.
 

  1. Describe the effect of government regulations on retailing.
  2. Understand the factors of international retailing.
  3. Discuss short-term and long-term planning for the future.
