Course Description
Covers the use of fiber rope, chain, slings, strapping, wire rope, and scaffolding when moving, repairing, and maintaining heavy industrial equipment and industrial site utilities. Includes applications to overhead cranes, tower cranes, mobile cranes, boom cranes, hoists, and fork lifts. Emphasizes safe work practices when rigging. Prerequisites: APR 164, and (WR 90 and RD 90) or IRW 90 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement or department permission. Audit available.
Addendum to Course Description
Required Course for Apprentices registered in the Millwright/Industrial Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Program. It is open to any other student but requires Department permission to take this course.
Intended Outcomes for the course
- Safely rig and move heavy industrial equipment using fiber rope and wire rope in tandem with overhead cranes, tower cranes, mobile cranes, boom cranes, hoists, and forklifts.
- Safely rig and move heavy industrial equipment using strapping and strap-slings in tandem with overhead cranes, tower cranes, mobile cranes, boom cranes, hoists and forklifts.
- Safely rig and move heavy industrial equipment using chain and chain-slings in tandem with overhead cranes, tower cranes, mobile cranes, boom cranes, hoists, and forklifts.
- *Demonstrate safe working practices including rigging and lock-out/tag-out according to state and federal regulations (* required statewide outcome).
- *Apply OSHA practices in relationship to a specific trade (*required statewide outcome).
Course Activities and Design
The Course Design will be limited lecture coupled with lecture-lab sessions for demonstrating safe rigging techniques and for practicing safe rigging techniques. Emphasis will be on application to a variety of real world industrial equipment.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Assessment will be accomplished using skills' checklists filled out by an adequate sampling of Millwright/Industrial Maintenance Technician Training Agents and/or an Apprentice's Journey Person.
Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
- Identify types of fiber rope
- Identify types of wire rope
- Identify types of chain
- Identify types of strapping
- Identify unsafe wear on fiber rope, wire rope, chain, and strapping
- Identify the components of tower cranes
- Identify the components of mobile cranes
- Identify the components boom cranes
- Identify the components of overhead and lateral hoists
- Identify the components of industrial fork lifts
- Practice tying the knots and splices used for rigging with fiber rope such as the bowline and clove hitch
- Practice fabricating the connectors and splices used for rigging with wire rope
- Memorize and practice hand signals used when lifting or laterally moving industrial equipment
- Identify and use the different types of rigging hardware such as U-bolts, shackles, hooks, and wedge sockets.
- Calculate allowable loads for fiber slings and chain slings
- Use manufactures specification to identify attachment points for rigging of industrial equipment.
